Core Process Psychotherapy

What is Core Process Psychotherapy?

Core Process psychotherapy is the original mindfulness-based approach to psychotherapy established in the UK in the 1980s. Therapists are trained at the internationally renowned Karuna Institute in Bristol.
It is a holistic and integrative approach to psychotherapy that combines elements of Western psychodynamic theory with Buddhist psychology and mindfulness. The therapeutic relationship lies at the heart of the practice. Therapists use a gentle and compassionate approach to support individuals in developing self-awareness and self-compassion. Together, they delicately explore an individual’s inner experience by mindfully attending to what arises in the present moment; these can be thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, the imagination and dreams. Through this joint enquiry they are able to navigate and uncover some of the underlying causes of suffering.
The term “core” refers to the core state inside us all; our essential nature that is already whole and free. The term “process” refers to the fundamental patterns and beliefs that shape an individual’s sense of self. These conditions are often limiting and strongly influenced in an individual’s history, including early childhood experiences, family dynamics, and cultural and societal influences.
Core Process Psychotherapy offers a powerful, non-pathologising approach to addressing the diverse array of reasons that prompt individuals to seek out therapy. This therapeutic method, which is practiced worldwide, is known for its gentle yet profound effectiveness. Core Process Psychotherapy enables us to reinterpret experiences that were initially perceived as negative and transform them into valuable opportunities for profound and lasting change.

My Approach

In today’s fast-paced world we are inundated with distractions that pull us away from ourselves. Society encourages us to seek happiness through consumption of substances, possessions and experiences that temporarily distract us, but never satisfy. By continuously turning away from ourselves in this way, away from the painful and often confusing and conflicting internal experiences we have, we deny ourselves the ability to be fully present in our lives.
I work with you to help you to come home to yourself; to awaken to the richness of the present moment, where life’s true beauty unfolds. We journey at your pace, guided by your unique experience and inner wisdom. By honouring and nurturing this innate health within you, you will embark on a path towards greater self-love, inner peace, and wholeness in the relationship you have with yourself, with others, and with the world around you. My aim is to help you find your way.
The Way Out Is In
— Thich Nhat Hanh

“Your task is not to seek love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”
